I think McHale Park was officially opened on May 24, 1931, with a blessing by Rev. Corcoran C.C. Castlebar, and a (senior) match between Mayo and Kildare. The second or upper pitch was opened, I think, in the late 1950's. I remember the Emmets hammering one of the other (lesser?) town junior teams in a final at McHale Park. I have a photo of me holding a little cup to show we won. Those matches were viewed as worthwhile events as parents and friends would attend, often wrapped in blankets while sitting on the concrete steps, along with ranking members of the GAA like Gerry McDonald? who would make the presentations at the conclusion of the match.
