In March 1924, Mr. Ellis, the official British hangman retired. On Tuesday September 20, 1932, Mr. Ellis committed suicide by cutting his throat. He was 58 years of age. The Mayo News reported that during his period as hangman Mr. Ellis had officiated at 203 executions. He had hanged Roger Casement on August 4, 1916, in Pentonville prison. On November 1, 1920, he hanged Kevin Barry in Mountjoy jail. On March 14, 1921, he hanged six other republicans - Patrick Doyle, Frank X.__, Patrick Moran, Bernard Ryan, Tommy Whelan and T.J. Byrne - also in Mountjoy jail.
