Ive noticed in the past weeks of the changing season with
the easing of the wind and rain how easy it is to miss
the sights and sounds around the town of Castlebar. The
daffodils are in full bloom and around 7 in the morning
a twin engined aircraft drones over the town but to where
I know not..Soon after the sound of higher flying jets
can be heard but for the first time in months the clattering
carriages of the Westport train woke me up at 20 to8.
The birds in the trees and hedgerows are also warming up for
a chorus for the rest of year and sleeping beyond 7 will be
impossible. So were all looking forward to the stretch in the
evenings but for this year no visits to the Par 3 at the 3 oaks
which has closed for good.Locals would be used to the 4.35 explosion
from the quarry which has frightened the life out of many a visitor
on the course.A blast from the past that has shook the town for donkeys
years.Mark the Yanks very entertaining diary on his short stay in town
referred to the smell of turf.I wonder what hed think if he were here 20yrs
ago when the smell of bonemeal used to waft over the place and stink us out of it from the Bacon factory or that sickly rancid smell from the
river in summer when it had that green look on it.And what would he make
of the clattering vats again from the factory when they emptied the Waddles
mixture onto the bare concrete floors.Cant ever remember smoke from the
Hat factory but looking forward to a fine summer and the smell of newly cut
grass on the Mall.
