Has the Army & Navy stores been demolished ? I remember buying a second hand hooded anorak there in the late 60s. It was multiple layered and kept me well anchored to the ground. It had a German emblem attached to a shoulder and a small stitch repair in the back, which Bo Bo Brennan assured me had been a real bullet hole. My mother hated it.
Imelda Marcos would have been envious of the footwear service which Stan Hynes provided to the women of Castlebar. The latest in fashion shoes could be purchased without setting foot in the shop. A phone call to Stan and within a short time the sitting room would have several shoe boxes opened to reveal glossy coloured high heels nestling in the white tissue paper. How did women ever walk in such footwear. Fr. Nohilly had the good sense to ban stilleto heels from the wood block parquet flooring in the church !
