I think the lake in the grounds was an artificial decorative fixture and was maintained by a dam in the river.
On a slightly related note though a few years ago I had a dream and a very ambitious plan (Which sadly never came to fruition) to stage a Classical Spectaular Concert with fireworks and the whole works in the grounds of the house with the stage say positioned down in the middle of the lake and all the audience positioned on the stepped lawns with their wine and cheese and crackers.
Oh I can still visualise it now looking at the picture. Of course I reakon it'll forever remain merely a dream, especially if one were trying to secure Mayo County Councils support or blessing!!
