Mayo ("my-oh") means May in Spanish. The Plaza de Mayo is named to record the fact that Argentina's independence process began in a building on this plaza on May 25, 1810. This plaza, which is elevated, is also the site of the original "fort Buenos Aires" founded by the Spanish in 1580.

You are right about the Irish flag. Most people do refer to it as green, white and gold. Incidentally, the arms of Ireland or state emblem is a gold harp on a dark cobalt blue or azure background. Its a beautiful emblem but we rarely see it.
