My Grandfather James Nyland was the first milkman that delivered around Castlebar. He had a farm across the road from the Bacon factory in Bacon Factory Road, now known as McHale Road. He delivered in the town by horse and float and the milk was in churns, people came out with jugs and he filled them up. This was in the 1930's.
Also my mother Agnes worked in the factory making sausages. She used to look after push-bikes for 6d a bike, at the County Gaelic football and hurling matches held at McHale Park. But unbeknownst to the owners Agnes and her sisters, Nan and Molly, used to ride them. Molly still lives in Castlebar now Molly Walsh. They spent the money on sweets and cidona.
