Your comments about Mary Hopkin's recording of "Those Were the Days" really rang a bell for me. It was on the radio in Tacoma, Washington while I was in U.S. Army Basic Training at Fort Lewis. A number of us thought it perfect in terms of describing the civilian life that we had recently set aside. In the context of an uncertain future, it set the tone very nicely. Later, I heard it more than once on BFBS in Berlin. To this day, it is the first song that I think of with that period.
