In the 1830's/40's the "Old Bridewell" - proper name - was just about where Cathal Duffy's is now. Down the hill from towards where McHale Road is now was the gate lodge at the entrance to "The Lawn". By the 1870's there was an "Asylum" at the end of what is now McHale Road. Once St. Mary's was built in the late 1800's, the Asylum at the end of what is now McHale Road became "The Farm" and was later the site of the Bacon Factory. My grandfather was, I think, the first Land Steward at St. Marys.
