The old Bank of Ireland was on the mall between the Imperial Hotel and Gavin's shop. The National Bank Limited was on Ellison Street (the site of the current Bank of Ireland). The National Bank was founded in London in 1834 and Daniel O'Connell was its first chairman. Sometime in the 1960's the Bank of Ireland took over the National Bank. I recently came across my old Thrift Deposit Account book with the National Bank Limited. The first depost to the account was in December 1956, and written in ink on the cover is a note stating that a Bank Type Safe was also issued in December 1956. Does anybody remember these home safes ?? One safe was in the shape of a book with the slot at the top. The second type was circular with slots along the side for pingins, florins etc.
