This time 11 years ago the nuns and their supporters were on a round the clock vigil to prevent the new road being built through the Lawn. Human barriers were formed on front of heavy equipment and to stop the felling of trees. There were tents for the protestors as well as a caravan ("central control") with a telephone link. One paper reported "...the protesting group which by dawn yesterday morning swelled in numerical strength....". The reporter obviously felt the need to link dawn with morning, and to to assure the readership that the crowd was only swelling numerically. Phrases remeniscent of war were heard such as "heavy equipment breached the wall". Sisters were reported to be under threat of arrest and imprisonment for their protest. One politician was scooped up by a digger leading one wag to declare ....... well better not repeat it.
