The tree looks like it might have been hit by lightening. What I find peculiar is the wooden fencing. This type of fencing was most uncommon in Ireland and especially the west of Ireland in the depressed 50s. The overall scene is a desolate wilderness. The fence is totally out of place.
I think the scene may be imaginary unless someone comes up with a line on the artist.
From what part of Castlebar do your wife`s ancestors come?
