Great account Murrisk. My memories of Reek Sunday / Saturday night are of the excitement prior to the actual climb from a child's perspective in Castlebar. Jack Mellett operating the Mex petrol pumps all through the night and selling "sticks for the reek". The lines and lines of traffic passing by the door. The sheer volume of cars was only so huge on reek Saturday night. The number plates from all the different counties....IA Antrim, IB Armagh, IC Carlow, ID Cavan, IE Clare and on and on it went.
The cars mostly black, Hillmans, Anglias, Zephrys,
Prefects, and of course plenty of the old reliable Morris Minors. Then in later years the V.W minibuses with the order of Malta personnel from so many different counties.
And most reek night it rained!
The older family members preparing for their climb with thick woollen socks ready to be donned, sandwiches for the hunger and something to quench the thirst. The big pilgrimage was about to start!
