The cloven feet belonged, according to the stories of the time, to the gentleman. There were other detals added, such as a whiff of brimstone and smoke - again from the gentleman. The clear implication was that the DEVIL himself, for it was he, was there, attempting to do infernal damage to the young ladies. As you rightly suggest, young men of the environs were fully capable of inflicting damage, internal as well as infernal, on the pure womanhood of mid Mayo.
