The convent (if you didn't get chased out of the place) or the road up to the barracks (Army) was always a better source for conkers than the Mall.

The McHale road lads used to just cut across the hills at the back of their houses to get to the same lucrative conker patch.

I always considered the Mall a poor second for these smooth, shiney, wooden gems !

We had a christian brother in National school who used to advise us on the best way to preserve or harden up your conker before a match . . . . something about steeping them in vinegar I think.

Nowadays we just grow GM conkers . . genetically modified to be harder, last longer and then even grow their own borehole for you to put your piece of string / shoelace through.
