The show you refer to was on T.V. though the name escapes me. A bushy haired, mustached, M.C. on a podium set out from stage right. Entertained the crowd between acts. His vast lexicon of complicated verbal tongue twisters delighting the crowd and with each utterance of bombastic bravado would slam a gavel down on the podium and the audience would howl with glee at his majestic manipulations!. For the trycicle act from Lancashire would probably pale by comparison. Opportunity knocks with
Hughie Green was one of my favourites,and later on the obnoxious but humourous gong show in the states.
