In times past the "Glorious Twelfth" was not
July 12th but the opening of the grouse season
on August 12th. For me, this hearlded the start
of trips to Langans after school to pick up shoe
boxes. These were used by my Dad to send (shot)
grouse, mallard, teal and woodcock to hotels in
Dublin. The little money makers went to Dublin by
train (steam later replaced by diesels). Couldn't
do it now.
