Can't tell you the difference if any between mummers and wren boys. Why were they always called wren "boys" didn't the girls get involved too?
It's strange, but we didn't have a great number of wren boys call in our neighbourhood on St. Stephen's Day and the ones who did were not as "polished" as the ones who called, and indeed still call to my wife's former home outside Westport. There, they have numerous callers and all seem to be so talented. I wonder if it's a case that the custom is still active in the more rural areas as opposed to the towns?
