Dessie was a great kicker for the Emmets ( and probably for the Davitt`s when the McHales lived on Newantrim St. He enthralled us younger kids on the green at Marian Row/ St Bridget`s Crescent with his kicking ability. The drop shot was his speciality.
With the advent of televised rugby internationals in the early 60`s Des procured an oval ball and very soon we were running our own formations up and down Marian Row ( few cars then) under his direction. We also played crickett with our own makeshift bats and wicket. Of course we always engaged in these foreign Saxon games with a watchful eye out for any of the Brothers that might be out watching for this devotion to the ways of the old enemy!
