This bulletin board is intended solely for stories and information about old Castlebar and Mayo long ago. The old Lawrence and Wynne Collection photos serve as a starting point but hopefully a wide ranging discussion will be established.
It is intended to answer questions such as: who lived in that building? when did gas and electricity come to Castlebar first? What did people do for a living? How many people lived in Castlebar before the famine and what was the population at the start of the 1900s? etc. etc. The possibilities are endless.
Stories about old Castlebar or famous characters would also be very welcome.
Anyone with old photographs who can scan them and would like us to put them up on the site we would be delighted to do this. We have a very interesting photograph of Turlough House taken in 1913/1914 which was emailed to us from an Australia correspondent trying to trace his Castlebar roots.
