Ooly, if that's the correct spelling, dealt in my mother's shop for years. If I as a achild was behind the counter, he would stand outside the door, on the street, reach in, rap his knuckles on the ice cream fridge, and say 'Is your mother in?'
I left home went to college, travelled the world, became a published writer, got further degrees in overseas universities, became a professional of not inconsiderable note. I was back in Castlebar and stood behind the counter of the shop. Ooly came along, saw me, stood outside, reached in, rapped on the ice cream fridge and demanded, 'Is your mother in?' Humility is learned.
Ooly had a forge at the back of Spencer St., and it really was magical. He was like something from Goldsmith's deserted village, as he worked the bellows, trimmed the hooves, beat the anvil, though not all at the same time. He was like the horse whisperer in his own way, as no animal ever seemed to panic when he worked on them. He smoked Woodbine cigarettes, down to the last few grains of tobacco. He cycled everywhere and recycled so he was ahead of his time in many ways. His son Noel is still in town, I do believe.
