The story of the re routing of the river has always puzzled me. If it happened it must have been some time prior to 1798 as I think there is some historical reference to the bridge at Best`s in accounts of the Races of Castlebar.
The question is why would such a task be undertaken ? The town would have developed adjacent to the natural river course. So what would have caused a need to divert the river ?
