In reply to Murrisk who states that the Old Infirmary was located between the Green Bay and the old Council Yard. It was exactly where the old council yard was. In other words, where the new offices for Mayo Co. Council are situated.
The houses from The Green Bay to what was Mellet's garage, were in fact a type of school for Lord Lucan's staff and all the houses had interconnecting doors at one time. By the way, the houses are still intact, (almost) in their outward original state. The interiors have been changed over the years.
The remnants of the old Infirmary were there in the early sixties and it served as our playground for many years. It was a dangerous place as the remaining structures were prone to fall at any time, but that didn't bother us as it was just super for cowboys and indians and other such games.I will always remember the great chases we got from Johnny Scriney who was in charge of the yard at the time and I also recall a very small man called Cusack who used to live in one of the horse drawn caravans in the yard. Those caravans were used by the workmen at the time for living in, and for storing materials, when they were away from base repairing the roads.
