O.K. we`ll assume you have finally got the the count right, so you are off the hook on that one and fair play your created to good memories for us.
The football - sin sceal eile. I`ll give you the benefit of the doubt about the Pearses hammering the Davitts and Shay Murtagh was excellent on the sports field but that was a cheap shot at poor Sean Hynes.
The Emmets fielded the class teams in the 60s Benny McHale and Gay Nevin both went on to win All Ireland minor medals for Mayo in `65? and Tom Hunt (Marian Row) went on to play on the Roscommon Senior team. Talents were nurtured on the green at Marian Row and the field at the back of the Ave. Remember players like Alan and Ray Quinn, Petey Vahey, Greg Earls, Noel(Bonnetti) Jennings,Seamie Gibbons, Tom Tom, Pollawalla, Sean Basquill all from the Avenue and environs. Kieran McHale, Ger Heverin, Tom and Mick Hunt, John, Mick and Eoin Flannery, Christy Walsh, Skipper McGough etc etc
The Emmets won the U11 final on a beautiful suumer evening in `64/65 beating McHales in a heart throbbing (mine) encounter! Captained by Kieran McHale we set off for the away ground. McHales always had the advantage of the home turf in finals and their mammies were great cheer leaders and always provided quartered oranges for their lads at half time.
JDP, not having the requisite physical stature of your typical GAA player plyed in the half forward s waiting for loose ball and trying desperately to avoid being creased, sandwiched or flattened in some way. However he did score the first point and to this day is happy with his contribution despite only getting a few kicks after opening the scoring for the winning team.
Some of our opponents I recall were Tim Gannon, Seamus Byrne, Cyril Foy (great buddies), Scackie Cresham, Davo Bennett, Nacie Rice, Pealaigh Bartley and more I just can`t recall now
Emmets comprised Kieran(Leo)McHale, Ber Kennedy, Davy Gilligan, Pat Heraghty, Alan Dunne, Hughie McDonnell, Tony McHugh,(all marian row and thereabouts), Liam Byrne, Seamie Mulchrone(Newport Rd.) Noel Jennings,Ray Quinn, Tom Tom, Seamie Gibbons, Paddy Kearney and John Hoban( all Westport Rd./ th Ave.)
Cup presentation was by Fr. Shannon and after being given a FIVER by Tom McHugh R.I.P. we raced triumphantly down McHale Rd., Spencer St., Castle St. to Jimmy Rowlands on Main ( OH "UP THE PEARSES" YOU FORGOT JIMMY`S KIDS IN THE COUNT )!
Jimmy provided the red lemonade and we were punch drunk with joy.
