Howdy Murrisk, good to see you back.
We always had long hot summers, did`nt we?
Swimming at the point, out to the log with Willie Dean keeping a watchful eye, and I hoped for the invitation, " hop on my back and I`ll bring you to the island" - a human ferry powered by the breastroke.
In later years the diving board was the place to be. The Point was for kids, the Board was for boys and girls!
Summer hops in the Tennis Pavilion, socials in the Town Hall, visiting French students, harvesting Smiler Murphy`s strawberry crop ( without his permission)
Hughie McDonnell always caught trout in the river behind the Hat Factory,
holidays in Enniscrone, the pier, the Valley of Diamonds, fresh mackeral, duilisk and seaweed baths

picking cockles at Bertrá, exploring the woods at Old Head, marvelling at the paradise of Thallabawn
daytrips to Pontoon
doing the hogies
thumbing to the fuschia pool, at the Great Southern, Mulranny. sneaking over the wall and hoping to blend in with the English guests.
watching the cars and motorbikes on the Newport Rd, heading for Achill for August or Whit weekends.
The first ever Walking Festival opening ceremony on the Mall in July 66`, the National flags, the ox roasting on the spit, smelly crubeens flying in all directions!
75`was a scorcher, the cross country rambles, the bogs ablaze in many areas. A medal " Ceithre Lá Caisleán a Bharraigh"
Yes, 85 was a dire summer.
As you say Murrisk, rain or shine it does`nt matter. An early 60s excursion to Salthill on one of those green CIE buses with a ladder snaking up it`s rear end, might have been dismally drizzly for many of the oldies in their full length plastic macs, but after the DINNER in Lydon`s, I had my first ever ride on the top of a double decker bus from Eyre Sq. to Salthill. My day was made.
