Excerpts from the "Leader" - July 25, 1908:

"The Marquis of Sligo is one of the great teritorial magnates of Connaught. He owns the town of Westport, and has a rent roll of about £16,000 per year. He possesses over a hundred thousand acres in the neighbourhood of the town. In his estate is included Croagh Patrick and the Errif Mountains, and many other mountains, too. None of the property has been sold to the tenants, as he was only willing to sell the mountains, but not the plains, when approached by a deputation on the subject, and this arrangement the tenants would not agree to.
.....................................
Irish is seldom used in Westport except by the people who come in from the Mount Party District.
.....................................
In one respect Westport has given a lead which might well be followed by the other towns in the country. It is now the most temperate town in Ireland.
.....................................
AS REGARDS THE BREWERY, IT WOULD SEEM TO BE DOING BUT A LITTLE TRADENOW-A-DAYS,AS, EVEN BEFORE THE TEMPERANCE WAVE PASSED OVERR THE TOWN THE WESTPORT PEOPLE WOULD NOT PATRONISE THE LOCAL-MADE PORTER. IT WAS NOT THE FASHION TO HAVE ANY BUT GUINNESS'S, EVEN THOUGH THE MOST ARDENT PATRON OF BREWED DRINKS WOULD FIND IT HARD TO JUSTIFY THE PREFERENCE FOR THE DUBLIN-MADE ARTICLE.
......................................
There are some fine stores at Westport Quay, but most of them are vacant."
