Posted by Rose on January 21, 2003 at 00:21:14: My grandfather was from one of the townlands outside Castlebar and was born in 1899. There was never a lot of talk about people's involvement with the move for Independence, etc. except to say that his parents had to attend Mass waist deep in water under a bridge and that the English soldiers came in to the village to take eggs and move fences, etc. The only thing I was ever told was that when he was a young man he guarded the barracks in Castlebar. What does that mean? What was his position/alignment was, can we tell from only this? He himself never had a bad word to say about any other living being plus we were very young & stupid - I was 19 when he died. It's not a topic a lot of the older generation like to speak of, and I can understand and respect that. Still I am curious! Thanks for any and all help! Can hardly wait to get back to Castlebar this summer! All the best!
