Interesting photograph Murrisk. Josie Dwyer was my grandmothers sister and she was married to Jack Loftus. They had one daughter, Vera, who died in her teens. After the sudden death of Jack, Josie took over his post at the gatelodge.( In which post I gather she was very popular with with all who passed through those big gates!) Subsequently she lived on St. Patrick`s Ave. and passed away in the 70s. In her youth she trained as a confectioner in Castlerea and on returning to Castlebar opened a confectionary shop in part of the family home, which was between Burleigh House and the PO ( No 1 Ellison St.) On one occasion the shop was attacked by the Black & Tans with a handgrenade. My Aunt has the Connaught Tel cutting of the report on the incident.
The pharmacist you mentioned was Joe Twiggs, Josie`s nephew, his mother being Cathleen Dwyer. His father Paddy was a cousin of Tom Twiggs of Twiggs`s Corner. Joe died a few years ago and is buried in the old cemetery. The Twiggs family lived on Market Square, where Dunnes now stands
