When I was a young fellow (back in the times of Tir na nÓg), when playpens were unheard of, tea chests were used to keep babies and toddlers out of harm's way. Mothers would tack a piece of padding around the edges to prevent toddlers hurting their mouth or damaging their teeth. Tea came in chests at that time and you could buy a pound or half-pound of loose tea. The chests were much sought after by mothers. If I remember correctly, the chests were about two and a half feet deep and three feet square feet in diameter.Incidentally, there was time when tea sellers went from house to house, particularly in rural areas, selling tea. There is a 'sceal' to be written about this sometime. It's still hard to beat the old cuppa!
