I think the one you refer to at The Sacred Heart home was not a tap but a 6-inch cast-iron pipe through which there was a continuous flow of water (from Crimlin, I believe). There was a style in the wall to access this pipe. The water flowed into the Shruffaun which flows under the houses along Davitt's Terrace.
