Must research the history of UK/Irish maps sometime.

I may be wrong but my understanding is that the UK Army mapped the UK itself, Ireland and parts of India to a 6" scale for military reasons. They wanted to be able to plan accurately the defense of the UK, and Ireland and India were the two parts of the then empire that were most likely to experience insurrection and thus require some form of military planning.

I blieve, these 6" maps remained the most accurate maps of these terrains until the advent of satellite images. Indeed they are still more accurate in certain ways because they contain the layer of intelligence describing buildings, place names and rights of way. These features are not immeadiately available from a satellite image are often layerd on afterwards using regular maps as a source.
