The tradition of The Waites is still being carried on in Castlebar during the run up to Christmas. The present duo comprises Stephen Guthrie (Butsy) and Joe Geraghty. Stephen has a magnificent voice and Fr. Shannon always engaged him for the Easter readings.
Unaware of this tradition of an early morning local weather report for each household, a recently arrived family to our road in the early sixties called the Guards at 3.00am to deal with the "racket" (brought to us at the time by Dessie Dunne?/ Ainsworth? and ?
Anyone know when this tradition started and if it is carried on in other towns?
