I go to Ireland a few times a yea,r and even though I live twenty-five minutes away from the airport I always fly to Dublin and rent a car there. Knock is well serviced with car hire companies but that is no use if the plane can't land due to fog or low cloud and you find yourself diverted to Shannon and bussed to Knock. Another thing that you may find useful is if you are travelling from the USA, book your car hire with a gold or platinum credit card and you avoid having to pay the CDL insurance.
