Now that the snow of 2000 is behind us, it may be safe to mention the blizzard which hit Mayo on February 24, 1947. The blizzard, which
came after weeks of bitter cold, left drifts of 6 to 15 feet. On December 26, 1998, Hurricane Stephen hit Mayo - well remembered with
much property damage. On a lighter note, the Mayo News records that in January 1960, a Mr. Michael Gallagher from Achill came back
from the U.S. to visit friends and family. He had survived the sinking of the Titanic and went by the name of Iceberg! A cool character.
