Great stuff Butch. I don't remember Skipper playing the spoons but I do remember him, in the Bridge Inn, Westport, rapping out the music on the table top using a half-crown or a florin held between the index and middle finger of each hand.
When MM posted the poem by Paul Durcan I believed I had never heard of Paul Durcan. The lights went on when you quoted lines from "Making love in the grass outside Aras an Uachtarain". An Irish cultural contingent, sent abroad by some agency in the homeworld, visited Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada, around 1987 or 1988. A gentleman, must have been Paul Durcan, recited this poem. Some accepted it well and some guffawed. I remember it well. Some ****** took my lined overcoat and left in its stead, a light coat many sizes too small and its cold in Saskatoon in winter.
