Aviva Health FAI Primary Schools 5 Asides

The Aviva Health FAI Primary Schools 5 a sides were held over 2 days in the superb facilities of Milebush Park, Castlebar on Thursday and Friday. The Medium and Large schools were held on Thursday with 24 boys teams , 9 Girls schools teams and St Pats, Castlebar and Claremorris partaking in the Boys Large schools.

After an exhausting day of football and 46 matches later we had winners in the 3 sections. In the B Schools competition for boys Gaelscoil Westport came out on top defeating Barnacarroll NS in the Final. In the B schools competition for girls Breaffy NS Castlebar came out on top with St Angelas Castlebar as runners up and St Pats NS, Castlebar narrowly defeating Claremorris NS in the Boys large schools.

On Friday the smaller schools competition took place with 36 boys teams and 40 girls teams participating and after 101 matches we had the following winners.

In the Boys section Straide NS came out on top defeating a gallant Ballintubber NS team and in the girls section Newport NS defeated Kilmovee NS.

These schools have now qualified for the Aviva FAI Connacht Primary Schools Finals which will take place in Shiven Rovers FC, Galway on Wednesday 7th May with the provincial winners progressing to the National finals to be held in the Aviva Stadium on the 28th May.

The FAI Development Officer Paul Byrne would like to say a big thank you to Tom Jennings and his staff for the organization of the pitches for the event, Harry Canning and John Culhane for their organization of fixtures and liasing with the schools and organization on the days, the participants on the FAS/FAI course as referees over the 2 days, it is easy to see why this is an FAI Regional Centre and great credit must go to the Milebush Stadium committee for their foresight in building and developing such a facility and also not forgetting the brand new 4G Astro which was widely enthused about by the teachers and children.
