FAI Schools are delighted to announce the launch of this year's FAI Schools' 5-a-Side competition.

Over 15,400 children from every county in Ireland will compete in the most fun filled event of 2012.

The FAI Schools 5-a-Side is the biggest competition to take place in the 2012 primary school soccer calendar. The competition has been running since the mid 1990's, the event is more popular than ever with nearly 1,000 schools currently involved. The games kick off in March and April, with Provincial Finals in May and the National Finals concluding on June 7, 2012. The winners from each county will go forward to their Provincial Finals and they then will battle it out at the National Finals.

There are 5 divisions to suit all school sizes. While FAI Schools encourage boys and girls to play on the same team, there is also a separate competition for girls' schools. A number of teams can represent one school depending on the size of their student body, giving more children the chance to develop their skills in a safe, child centered and exciting environment.

As part of their spring 2012 programme of events Mayo Sports Partnership are to host a club development seminar for sports clubs / groups on Monday 6th February 7pm - 10pm in Breaffy GAA Centre Castlebar. Keynote speaker on the evening will be Minister of State for Sport and Tourism Michael Ring who will be joined on the night by local experts giving presentations on a number of pertinent topics including child protection in sport, generating income through better use of facilities, social media for beginner clubs, committee structures / roles and volunteer recruitment strategies. Indeed as part of the proceedings Minister Ring will also locally launch the new Get Ireland Active website www.getirelandactive.ie which is a one stop shop for physical activity in the country.

Clubs / organisations are challenged, in the current economic climate, to raise enough funds for their club. One of the seminars key inputs will be on how clubs can utilise their indoor / outdoor facilities to generate additional income. Practical ideas will be presented, utilising a successful club template in Breaffy GAA Club with examples of successful Sports Partnership and other programmes also highlighted on the night.

The seminar MC Liam Horan will ensure that the event will be interactive in nature, attendees will be able to select from 3 workshops on the night with a questions and answers session also part of the programme. An individual fee of €10 will apply but clubs will be able to send a maximum of 4 representatives for a nominal €20. An added bonus is that all clubs represented on the night will be entered into a draw for €200 worth of sports equipment kindly sponsored by Elverys Sports. A representative of Elverys Sports will also be discussing the great team wear ranges available from Elverys Sports.

" Mayo Sports Partnership realises that club volunteers are facing many issues of which changes in child protection legalisation is one. We hope that the seminar will inform people and give them some ideas on how to make their club more effective. I would particularly like to thank Minister Michael Ring for his support and also acknowledge South West Mayo Development Company, Mayo North East Leader Partnership, Mayo County Community Forum, Mayo County Development Board and Elverys Sports without whom this event would not be able to take place" commented Mayo Sports Partnership Co-ordinator Charlie Lambert.

The seminar will appeal to sports volunteers, administrators, coaches, leaders, teachers, parents, sport development officers or general members of the public who may be interested in being involved in sport in their local community. Indeed the event is open to members of any clubs / organisations who may not have sport / physical activity as part of their central focus. To book your place at the event you can download an application form at www.mayosports.ie/news where you can also view a wide range of other workshops / courses such as Child Protection in Sport, Sports Leadership, Sports First Aid, funding information and disability awareness.
