1. PaddleWest
This coming weekend, the 24th/25th of August Paddlewest is being held at Lough Lannagh, Castlebar. Paddlewest is a weekend of competition canoeing and ‘come and try it' sessions for those interesting in the sport of canoeing. There will be opportunities to try out canoeing on both days and also the opportunity to watch youngsters try their skills at three different disciplines of competition canoeing. The event is attracting competitors from Galway, Ballina, Clare, Enniskillen, Dublin and of course Castlebar.
On Saturday there will be a ‘Come and Try it' for members of the public and this will run from 10 to 12. To participate you will need old footwear, bathing suit, shorts and any sports top.
Later on that morning there will be a Slalom Canoeing event at Lough Lannagh starting at 1100. This event will take place up towards the new road bridge. Canoe Slalom is an exciting sport in which Ireland has been represented in every Olympics since 1992. Canoe Slalom involves a combination of strength and skill as each canoeist has to negotiate their way through a series of ‘gates' hanging over the water.
On Saturday afternoon there will be a canoe polo event which can be viewed from the main car park. Canoe Polo is a fast and furious game involving two teams of five players each battling to score goals in two suspended goals.
On Sunday morning there will be opportunity to participate in the ‘Come and Try it' canoeing for members of the public again from 10 to 1200. At 1030 on Sunday morning the canoeists will be participating in the endurance discipline of Canoe Marathon. The first race is for the younger participants and will be from the car park to the new foot bridge and back. At 1100 there will be two other races which will involve laps of Lough Lannagh. So all-in all a great event whether you wish to spectate or partake. Special thanks for the support from the Mayo Sports Partnership, Castlebar Town Council, The Outdoor Education Department in GMIT and McHale Marine. 2. Goal to Work Erris
Are you Unemployed and living in the Erris area?Do you want a coaching qualification in GAA, Rugby and Soccer so that you can work as a Coach?
"Goal to Work" is an exciting initiative originally piloted in Mayo in 2010 by Mayo County Development Board. The first programme trained 12 jobseekers to become fully qualified soccer coaches and referees with many of those gaining part time employment as a result. "Goal to Work 2" in Ballina and "Goal to Work 3" in Ballyhaunis built on the successful pilot initiative giving participants the opportunity to train at foundation level in Soccer, GAA and Rugby. Each trainee coach delivered coaching in local primary schools in Ballina and Ballyhaunis with the support of FAI County Development Officer Paul Byrne, Mayo Games Manager Billy McNicholas and Domestic Games Manager Connaught IRFU Lyndon Jones.
Goal to Work 4 specifically targets unemployed males and females living in the Erris area who are in receipt of a social welfare payment. Participation on this two day week course (over 14 weeks) based in Belmullet will not affect this payment. This sports coach training programme, in addition to the practical elements, will include a classroom based learning component with FETAC accredited modules in IT and Personal Effectiveness. It will also deliver accredited training in Occupational First Aid, Child Protection in Sport, Irish Sports Council Active Leadership and Disability Awareness. In addition to these accredited modules the programme will also provide information through specialist guest speakers on how to set up and manage your own business, enterprise opportunities, job readiness skills, personal development, building self esteem and self confidence, identification of personal progression options in employment, further education and training. Mayo Job Club will work with trainee coaches to improve their interview performance skills through provision of live interviews that will be digitally recorded with one to one critique of these interviews to enable improved performance at interviews.
