1. Summer Camp Update

Inclusive Camp at An Sportlann from July 14th to 18th July

A week long 'Inclusive Camp' was held at An Sportlann Castlebar and was attended by 15 participants The Summer Camp is in its fourth year and is hosted by Sports Inclusion Disability Officer Ray Mc Namara. It is organized on the back of a very successful summer camp last year and a Children's Saturday Club that runs throughout the year.

The Camp took place from the 14th - 18th July from 10am - 2pm in An Sportslann Castlebar. The camp is aimed at Children with a disability their family and friends. The camp consisted of various sports with each day having a theme of a different sport as well as lots of fun games. Participants concentrate on Skill, balance, coordination, concentration, confidence building and fun. The participants were aged from 5 - 15 years of age.



Children's Soccer Camp from July 9th to July 30th

A 4-week soccer camp for children ages 7+ is running at the New Town Park Castlebar every Wednesday for 4 weeks from 3-4pm. The camp is finishing this Wednesday July 30th. Approx 20 local children are enjoying being put through their paces by Paul Byrne development officer with the FAI. The camp was organised by Castlebar Sports Forum to target children from the urban area of Castlebar that may not have access to other camps in the area. Paul is teaching skills through small sided games including lots of physical activity. The camp is a follow on from an after school camp held in June and it is hoped that further such programmes can be rolled out in the future.

Hip Hop Camp from July 16thto August 6th

A 4-week hip hop camp for children ages 10+ is running at Scoil Raifteiri Castlebar every Wednesday for 4 weeks from 3-4pm. The camp is finishing this Wednesday August 6th. Approx 20 local girls are participating and are learning the fabulous skills of hip hop from instructor Polly Anne. She is originally from Brazil and the girls (mostly teenagers) are enjoying learning all the amazing hip hop moves. The camp was organised by Castlebar Sports Forum to target teenage girls/children from the urban area of Castlebar that may not have access to other camps in the area. Polly Ann is a firm favourite with the girls and a dance group in the area would be a dream for the future for some of them.

This camp is also a follow on from an after school camp held in June and it is hoped that further such programmes can be rolled out in the future.

Ballina Children's Multi Sports Camp from July 21st-July 25th

Multi Sports Camp at the Outdoor Multi Use Games Area at Greenhill's Estate, Ardnaree, Ballina and included Tennis, Soccer, and Gaelic.

The camps were delivered with the assistance by representatives from Allwin Tennis Foundation, FAI and Ardnaree Sarsfields .

25 local children participated in all the activities and were kept active with a tennis hour every day with Janas the coach. The children were taught lots of sporting skills. They also participated in a soccer hour with Junior Humber our local Goal to Work coach who always brings lots of fun and games into his sessions. On Friday Ardnaree Sarsfields coaches put the children through their paces on the Green Areas of Greenhills engaging lots of local children from the Greenhills, Millview and Cluain Na Ri estates.

Camps in Castlebar and Ballina were organised by Castlebar Sports Forum and Moy Sports Forum respectively. The forums are multiagency groups which Mayo Sports Partnership is the lead sporting agency.

3. Participation Opportunities this Summer for People with a Disability

Surfing day for children with Autism (Surf2Heal) with Mayo Surf School, will take place on Saturdays over 10 weeks beginning 21st June, at Carrownisky Strand Louisburgh.

Boccia league will continue on Monday the 8th September from 12-4pm in Ballina.
There has being a good turnout at events so far with teams travelling from Galway and Ballina as well as local clubs such as Parke, Charlestown and Turlough.

4. No Limits Gym Challenge

Can your team cover the distance and get to the All Ireland Gym Challenge Final?

Enable Ireland, Action on Disability are hosting a gym challenge in which teams of four take on challenges to cover the furthest distance and that team will then go forward to the All Ireland Gym Challenge Final in City West Hotel on 19 October 2014.
All you have to do is log onto www.mycharity.ie, search for ‘No Limits Gym Challenge', find the heat nearest to you and register your team!

Mayo Community Engagement Network

The Department of the Environment & Local Government has issued guidelines that the County Community Forum be replaced by a Public Participation Network (PPN) which will be supported by Local Authorities. The new Network is based on the Working Group Report on "Citizens Engagement with Local Authority" www.environ.ie/en/Publications/Community/CommunityVoluntarySupports


Mayo County Council recognises the invaluable contribution of volunteers and will continue to support the work of the community & voluntary sector here in the county. The Community & Integrated Section of Mayo County Council is now setting up a new Mayo Community Engagement Network to replace the Community Forum. A new data base is being established and it is intended that the Network will be operational by the end of September 2014.


We are now inviting all active community and voluntary groups (clubs & organisations) to register with the Mayo Community Engagement Network. Groups that were previously registered with the Forum will receive a new application form by email and post. Registration is ongoing but in order for your group to participate in the nominating process for membership of the Mayo County Council committees, that seek community representation, your group must be registered by 5pm September 10th 2014.

6. Training / Events Calendar Autumn 2014

A full listing of training courses in areas such as Child Protection in Sport, First Aid, Disability Awareness, Club Development ie Funding, PR etc and sports seminars will be shortly available and will be posted on our website www.mayosports.ie and on our social media feeds on Facebook and Twitter in the coming weeks.



7. 11th National Coaching Forum due to take place in Sligo this September

The 11th National Coaching Forum will take place at Institute of Technology Sligo, 26th-27th of September 2014. This Forum promises to be the biggest and most extensive gathering of professionals and volunteers involved in Sport Coaching. The Forum will attract coaches, physical education teachers, sports scientists, National Governing Body personnel and policy makers. Leading National and International presenters will take part in this event titled "Fun to Full Potential - Coaching the whole Athlete"

The Forum will combine Keynote speakers, with practical and applied sessions, with opportunities to network with coaches from different sports. Previous National Coaching Forum has welcomed up to 800 coaches, both National and international. The Forum has become a "can't be missed" event on the sporting calendar, involving coaches at all levels from up to 48 different sports.

8. Explore A Blueway this Summer!

‘Blueway Taster Days' are being held in Mayo and Galway throughout the summer.

The Taster Days are an opportunity to take part in a reduced cost water activity from mid-morning to early evening. Activities at the different venues will vary but include kayaking, snorkeling and coasteering (wet climbing fun). The next Blueway taster day is Sunday 3rd August in Old Head Louisburgh. All ages are invited to come along and join in on the day, but please let us know if you are coming so that we do not disappoint anyone. Email the Blueway team at info@blueway.ie

9. Races of Castlebar
Races of Castlebar will take place this August with a 5k run on Tuesday August 12th, 7k on Tuesday 19th and 10k on Sunday 24th August. Details (times/routes) to follow.
