Did You Get on Your Bike during Bike Week 2014?
National Bike Week was launched in 2009 to raise the profile of cycling as a healthy and fun mode of transport. Mayo Bike Week is an integral part of the overall National Bike Week initiative and is organised by a local steering committee comprising of representatives from Mayo Sports Partnership, Mayo County Council, Westport Smarter Travel, An Taisce and the Road Safety Authority.

Bike Week ran from the 14th - 22nd June and with weather conditions absolutely fabulous the centre of this years Bike Week activities was 5 school / public cycles which took place in Ballina, Ballinrobe, Ballyhaunis, Castlebar and Westport. These lunchtime cycles through the towns were highly successful with 300 participants with many thanks to the Gardai who provided an escort for all the different groups. In addition to the above cycles the committee invited community groups / organisations to organise their own event during the week and a number of events were organised. These events included a Family Day for Cyclists on Lacken Strand, Bike Fest in Lecanvey Westport which had 120 participants, a bike history tour in Ballinrobe, Childrens Bike Day in Ballindine organised by Davitts GAA, Duathlon and Fun Day in Killeen Louisburgh and many more.

Other events included Mens Shed Castlebar and Westport Bike Days and Family Cycles in Belleek Woods Ballina. In total 16 events from Kilmovee to Belmullet were run with a total of over 600 participating.

More information on Bike Week can be found at www.bikeweek.ie

Erris Little Athletics Jamboree 2014
The ‘Little Athletics' Programme for all primary school classes and ages proved to be an outstanding success in the Erris area over the 10 week period. 15 schools in total took part in the programme and received two visits from coaches over the ten weeks. On June 10th all 15 schools with approximately 390 pupils came together for our Little Athletics Jamboree. The day was a brilliant success and thoroughly enjoyed by all pupils, teachers and coaches.

To follow up on this programme and ensure sustainability of the initiative, Mayo Sports Partnership plans to run a training day for teachers of Primary Schools involved in the programme. An incentive for schools to become involved would be a subsidy towards the purchase of appropriate equipment.
