Olympians to share thoughts on Womens Participation in Sport
Women in Sport Seminar - Friday 3rd May

Olympians Sonia O'Sullivan and Olive Loughnane will lead out a strong team of sports women at a special seminar to explore womens participation and equality in sport / physical activity. ( See attached poster for more information).

The Seminar, called Women in Sport - Are we gaining Ground? will take place on Friday, May 3rd in the GMIT Castlebar starting at 12.30pm. It will be chaired by Ballycroy native and well known GAA journalist with the Western People Michael Gallagher. Current Mayo Ladies GAA player Cora Staunton, Irish Womens Rugby International Carol Staunton and Special Olympic athlete Bridget Walsh will also attend.

The open debate will explore all aspects of womens involvement in sport including issues such as:
· Womens participation and equality in Sport

· The issues and barriers with teenage girls involvement in sport / physical activity

· the demands and pressures on female high performance athletes

· Strategies to promote involvement in sport / physical activity by girls / women

The seminar is one of the key events during the Castlebar Festival of Sport Weekend which is taking place from the 3rd - 5th May. The weekend incorporates events such as the Western People West of Ireland Womens Mini Marathon, Pink Ribbon Cycle, come and try adventure sports at Lough Lannagh and is organized by the recently formed Castlebar Sports Forum under the auspices of Mayo Sports Partnership. Other partners include G.M.I.T. Castlebar, Castlebar Town Council, Mayo County Council, the Irish Sports Council and the Gathering.

Directly targeted at teenage girls and women it is hoped that secondary schools would look to send Transition or 5th Year students to the event. Budding future sports stars, those who are competing at club, county or national level now, parents, coaches and managers are also invited to this free event.
