1. Mayo Sports Partnerships Autumn / Winter 2015 Training & Events Programme

Child protection in sport, sports first aid, sports leadership training, walking leader training, disability inclusion training, club development workshops and leader training for volunteers working with older people groups  are just some of the upcoming sports volunteer  training courses which will be available through Mayo Sports Partnership over the coming months. These courses / seminars are aimed at community / sport volunteers, coaches, teachers or indeed anyone who may have an interest in sport or physical activity. Included in the comprehensive schedule is a series FREE of Sports Volunteer Workshops provided by the Irish Sports Council at a number of venues around the country. These FREE workshops are booked on a first come first served basis and topics include time management, event planning, finance, governance, public relations and social media. Another interesting feature of the Autumn schedule will be the return of the Success in Sport Series with a  Seminar titled " Drugs in Sport"  This event will explore aspects of sporting life including issues including performance enhancement drugs in sport, impacts of alcohol use on sports performance and recovery, the demands and pressures on high performance athletes, day to day routine, preparation, the importance of leadership, management and preparation so that teams and individuals can make winning a habit. Run in collaboration with the Western Regional Drug Task Force this seminar will be part of the  annual Drug and Alcohol Awareness Week in November

2. Go for Life Grant Scheme for Older People Groups - Now Open

The Go for Life Small Grant Scheme for Sport and Physical Activity for older people is now open. The scheme is aimed at encouraging older people to get active and is used by groups and clubs all over Ireland to buy equipment, run sports events or try new activities. Last year over 1,000 groups and organisations availed of this opportunity. Each grant awarded this year will be between €250 and €700.

3. Martin Sheridan Bursary Awards 2015 now Open for Applications

Thank to the generous support of Mayo County Council the Martin Sheridan Bursary Awards for 2015 are now open for applications by relevant sporting bodies and organisations. Forms and application criteria are downloadable from sites.google.com/site/martinsheridanbursary by email request to martinsheridanbursary@gmail.com . The closing date for completed entries is September 18th 2015

The Martin Sheridan Bursary Awards are for sports people who have excellent potential, outstanding ability and the desire to perform at the highest level possible in their chosen sport and have the potential to bring recognition and success at National and International level to Mayo. The awards are designed to assist in the cost of education, training, travel and equipment.

The awards came about following discussions between Councillor Joe Mellett and Joe O Neill regarding the desire of Mayo County Council to recognise in some manner the achievements of Martin Sheridan and as the local civic authority to help perpetuate his memory. The idea of a bursary was brought before the County Council by Councillor Mellett and received unanimous support. The Council approved €5,000 for the bursary awards in 2013 & 2014 and again now in 2015 have generously supported the awards.

 

4. Internships with Mayo Sports Partnership now Available

Position 1

Title of Internship : Sports Project Worker

Learner Outcome: The intern will gain practical experience in a busy sports office. Some of the key experience will be data compilation and research in areas such as Outdoor Recreation, Men on the Move, Goal to Work Sports Coach Training Programme and the Community Sports Hub initiative.. The successful applicant will be required to liaise with the general public, stakeholders, partner agencies etc through meetings, phone and other mediums such as Social Media.

Person Specifications: Some interest is sport is desirable but not essential. The person should have excellent IT and communication skills . They should have the ability to work off their own initiative in delivering desired goals. The person will be required to report on a weekly basis to management.

Position 2

Title of Internship : Assistant Sports Administrator

Description: The intern will gain practical experience in a busy office environment. Some of the key experience will be assisting in the administration of key participation events. The Intern will receive formal/informal training in the following: Formal - health and safety, interpersonal and communication, database management and other relevant training which will be identified during induction. Informal - Project administration skills ie online booking system management, website and social media updating, filing, note taking of meetings, customer care etc alongside experienced sport development staff.

Person Specifications: The person should have good IT and communication skills as they may be the point of contact for public enquiries. They should have the ability to work off their own initiative in delivering desired goals.


5. Applications Open for Goal to Work Sports Coach Training West Mayo

Are you unemployed/working part time/ previously self employed? Do you want a coaching qualification in GAA, Rugby and Soccer so that you can work as a Coach?

This Goal to Work Sports Coach Training Programme will include a classroom based learning component including a FETAC accredited module in Occupational First Aid. It will also deliver accredited training in Child Protection in Sport, Irish Sports Council Active Leadership and Disability Awareness. In addition to these accredited modules the programme will also provide information through specialist guest speakers on how to set up and manage your own business, enterprise opportunities, job readiness skills, personal development, building self esteem and self confidence, identification of personal progression options in employment, further education and training.

Mayo Sports Partnership and Mayo North East would like to invite applications from unemployed people or people who may be working part time. Also from anyone previously self employed who will commit to attending this Goal to Work Sports Coach Training Programme for three days a week over ten weeks. Each participant will become a qualified GAA, Soccer, Rugby coach with other add on sports such as Little Athletics. The programme will commence in mid September and is open to currently un/underemployed men and women who can see the potential in becoming a part time / full time coach in these sports or in developing their own business.

"Goal to Work" Sport Coach Training Programme is supported by the Dormant Accounts Board and is an equal opportunities training programme.Places will be limited to 12 trainee coaches. 6. Men on the Move "The best move you'll ever make"

Worried about that extra weight? Thinking about getting more active? Want to improve your overall health and wellbeing?

Mayo Sports Partnerships in collaboration with HSE West, Roscommon Sports Partnership and Waterford I.T. are offering a  new programme for men aged 35+ over the coming weeks in the Ballaghdereen, Ballina and Crossmolina areas. These new groups will be part of a national study on Mens Health taking place in several counties across Ireland.

Men on the Move is a physical activity programme that is aimed at adult men to get them active, have fun and improve their fitness levels. It involves:

-          twice-weekly physical activity sessions over 12 weeks that are led by a qualified instructor to meet your needs.

-           structured physical activity sessions so that you can find a level and pace that suits you.

-          workshops on nutrition and well-being for men.

Three open evenings are being organised, where men can come along and get a free health check ( from 7pm), information on healthy eating and sign up to an activity programme. The open nights are in the following venues:

Ballina Family Resource Centre  on Tuesday 8th September 7.30pm

Crossmolina GAA Centre  on Wednesday  9th September 7.30pm

Community Resource Centre, Market St, Ballaghaderreen, Co Roscommon on Thursday 10th September 7.30pm

Please note that Men on the Move is also available in Achill, Ballyhaunis, Ballinrobe, Erris, Castlebar, Claremorris, Manulla, Swinford and Westport. Registrations for these ongoing programmes will be open from the beginning of October.

So get out there and get active and be part of this super programme.

 

7. European Week of Sport 7th - 13th September

The inaugural European Week of Sport is running from the 7th to the 13th of September across all EU member states. It aims to encourage participation in all forms of sport and physical activity

The Irish Sports Council is the coordinating body for the European Week of Sport and all events (in Ireland)  can be viewed on www.irishsportscouncil.ie and http://ec.europa.eu/sport/week/

In the run up to the week we are keen to have as comprehensive and broad listing of events for Ireland as we possibly can. We would be most grateful if you are holding any events between the 7th and the 30th of September to register them through the below link. We would be particularly interested in seeing events listed that are open for people participate in including:

·         Walking events / festivals / Community walks

·         Cycling events

·         Charity events

·         GloHealth Fit4life

·         Cycle For Life events

·         Local Club events

·         School / Child focused events

·         Men in motion / running etc

·         Sport training / coaching events

·         Health & Fitness classes

·         Basically any sport, fitness & Physical activity events

8. Partial Exemption from Commercial Rates for Community Sports Clubs

The Valuation (Amendment) Act 2015 provides a new partial exemption from commercial rates for Community Sports Clubs that are registered under the Registration of Clubs (Ireland) Act 1904. Buildings or part of buildings used for or in conjunction with the sale or consumption of alcohol or food, retail use or hire to non-community organisations continue to be liable for rates.

In order to avail of this partial exemption, Community Sports Clubs registered under the Registration of Clubs (Ireland) Act 1904 are required to complete and submit an application, with supporting documentation, to the Valuation Office on or before Tuesday September 15th 2015.

9. Accredited Youth Sport Leadership Training to be delivered this Autumn

The Level 1 Award in Sports Leadership provides the ideal starting point for learners aged 13 years and over who wish to develop their leadership skills, whilst under the direct supervision of their Tutor/Assessor or other suitably qualified adult.

The syllabus is designed to develop generic leadership skills that can be applied to a variety of sports and/or recreational situations as well as contributing to the personal development of the learner.The Level 1 Award in Sports Leadership is a practical award in which learners must demonstrate their ability to lead others in simple sport/activity.

Mayo Sports Partnership plans to work through second level schools and youth organisations to roll out this new course. Earlier in 2015 the Active Teens junior assistant leader programme was piloted in 4 second level schools and proved to be  a great success. This accredited programme will build on the Active Teens initiative and make it available to more schools across the county.

10. Get Ireland Walking Programme Manager

The successful candidate will work to; ensure the continued development of the Get Ireland Walking initiative at a national level, facilitate the delivery of the programme at a local level through Local Sport Partnerships and support the established and development of sustainable local community walking groups.

Duration: A one year contract will be offered to the successful applicant, subject to successful completion of a six-month probationary period and this will be renewable subject to availability of continued funding.

Salary Range: €36,000 to €40,000 per annum.

Location: The position will be based at the Mountaineering Ireland's Office, Irish Sport HQ, National Sports Campus, Blanchardstown, Dublin 15.

Boccia

Sunshine Club

An activity club for children with a disability will take place in the Gateway leisure Complex on Saturday 5th September Belmullet.

Surfing day for children with Autism (Surf2Heal) with Mayo Surf School, will take place on Saturdays at 1pm, at Carrownisky Strand Louisburgh.

Para Cycling
