Castlebar Urban District Council

Marsh House Photo Castlebar Urban District Council (UDC) is the local authority for Castlebar Town. There are nine elected members who meet several times each month. The main meetings are held in public with coverage from local print and electronic media. The UDC is responsible for planning permissions within the town boundary and raises revenue by levying rates on business premises. The photograph shows the UDC's offices which are located at Marsh House beside the Castlebar River at Newtown.
The UDC has overall responsibility for the castlebar.ie domain name and hopes to develop it as a means to aid democracy, community and commercial life in Castlebar. A number of exciting proposals have been put forward as part of the Telecom Information Age Town competition which would be viable in a town whose population has widespread access to e-mail and the Internet. These include e-mail contact between the public and councillors and officials at Marsh House, electronic straw polls, discussion groups on local town issues, electronic payment facilities, etc.
