Thomas Moran, St.Anne's,Westport had a great contest with Eamonn O'Keane, St.Canice's, Dungiven, in the semi-final of the Middleweight contest. Moran started well and looked to have the edge on the Dungiven man in the first round, but despite Moran's accurate jabs O'Keane kept coming forward to shade the second round. Having taken the lead the Dungiven man was not letting things slip and continued to keep the advantage to win on points over four rounds. In the Heavyweight contest Philip Byrne despite being up against it with Sligo's Alan Reynolds, who was going for a family record of five titles in a row by two brothers, Moran boxed out of his skin but could not rock Reynolds who showed why he hopes to be in the record books next Friday night, he outfoxed Byrne with every shot and finished a clear winner in the third round,on the 15 points rule difference, when the contest was stopped, we will no doubt see more of Byrne, and it is expected that despite the result he has earned his chance to represent Ireland as a stand in for Reynolds with this display. The Finals take place next friday night the 21st., at the National Boxing Stadium, we have two Connaught men in action at both ends of the bill, Thomas Lee, Oughterard Boxing club at Flyweight and of course Alan Reynolds From St.Josephs, Sligo at Heavyweight. We wish both the best of luck, it is expected that both will win.
