MAYO BALLOT PAPER - AN ONLINE POLL
******************************
We have had a great response so far to our
online Mayo Constituency ballot paper. We have written some software to mimic the new electronic vote counting which is being tested in three constituencies this election. If you are quick you can still participate in this poll. Just fill in your preferences on the ballot paper voting 1, 2, 3… etc., in order of your preference as you would in the real election. Duplicate votes are automatically deleted so the people attempting to vote 50 times for the same candidate will no doubt be disappointed! The results will be posted on Wednesday next with all transfers calculated and seats filled in a full Single Transferable Vote PR count but - done in seconds rather than hours. [Please note that this poll closed on Wednesday 15th May 2002]

>> ANOTHER MILLION HIT WEBSITE HOSTED IN CASTLEBAR
******************************
The power of the Internet was clearly demonstrated in April as Internet Traffic into Castlebar's Server Network ramped up to a most extraordinary degree. One of our hosted sites,
www.totalshave.com broke all records with one million hits achieved in just two weeks at the beginning of April. Over one million separate files were downloaded from this site in 14 days! Thousands of visitors requested samples of the total shaving solution which is marketed in Ireland by Tom Murphy's Castlebar-based company, Pamex Ltd.

Tom Murphy certainly brought Castlebar to the Internet in April. The phenomenal amount of traffic received clearly demonstrates how a small town in the West of Ireland can use the Internet to reach out to the rest of the world. Whereas a typical web site attracts something like nine hits over its entire lifetime, effective marketing of sites can make the difference. Totalshave.com is a clear example of what can be achieved.

It also demonstrated the robustness of the Castlebar Server Network which effortlessly dished up the pages to the world even on the days when well over 100,000 files per day were served up from the totalshave site alone. Remember that there are now over 175 separate domains hosted on Castlebar Server Network with totalshave.com being just one of these.

>> HEALTH AND SOAPS
******************************
Out of sheer curiosity in April we ran a series of health-related polls. Over 70% of you paid a visit to the doctor in the last year with about 12%
visiting a doctor in the past week. The healthier 30% of you had not visited the doc in over a year. Among other items the polls showed that 28% of people visiting Castlebar.ie have had their appendix removed! Almost 60% have been taken to the Accident and Emergency at some point in their lives and 27% had taken non-prescribed drugs in the previous 24 hours. Some 68% admitted that they feel that they are overweight and, perhaps, a related result was that 35% of visitors had eaten fast food in the past week; while only 11% claimed to be vegetarians.

The shutdown of the Castlebar TV deflector in April prompted a number of polls aimed at deciding how many people rely on the Deflector as opposed to satellite for their daily dose of TV. In a
poll on 24th April 65% of Castlebar-based replies said that they rely on the Deflector System for their multi-channel TV. Approximately 33% of respondents in Castlebar said they had Sky TV, with 54% saying they missed the deflector and only 13% claiming that they did not miss it. A separate poll showed that 32% of you had SKY regardless of whether they lived in Castlebar or not - agreeing quite well with the previous survey. Of those living in Castlebar, 40% said they had paid their 65 euro deflector subscription, 39% said they had not and 20% said they only watch RTE and TG4! The latter poll was taken very shortly after the shutdown of the system. Later, in the first week of May, 32% of you said that they had watched Coronation Street in the past week in spite of the deflector shut-down - a figure which matches the original percentage of those with SKY subscriptions very closely. So it looks like people are grinning and bearing it and carrying on without Coronation Street and other programmes only available on multi-channel TV!

>> SUPPORT
WWW.CASTLEBAR.IE
******************************
You can support www.castlebar.ie by advertising your business with us. Our current
online advertising rate card for www.castlebar.ie may surprise you. While, www.castlebar.ie is a non-profit community web site with a lot of voluntary effort, it does cost money to keep it going. The project team are keen to obtain additional local advertising support. This is a new departure as there has been very little advertising on the site up to this point.
For from as little as 7.50 euros per 1000 pages you can put your banner on the front page of the Castlebar web site and for just 100 euros you can be guaranteed that 20,000 viewers will see your advertisements. Alternatively you can place a small micro-banner advert on the site from just 10 euros per week. Another option for businesses is to sponsor special pages such as the
webcam, crossword, email directory page, the local paper reviews, and a range of other pages for just 50 euros per month. We also invite sponsorship for our online competitions at 100 euros plus the prize to be offered. There are also a number of free advertising slots on the site for jobs, buy and sell and business directory for local businesses.
Virtually all our visitors have Mayo links so it is a highly targeted advertising opportunity for Mayo businesses. The
demographic survey for the site shows that 69% of its readers live in Ireland (with 47% of these within a 10-mile radius of Castlebar town and 54% in County Mayo). Of the remainder 15% live in the USA, 9% in the UK and 7% in the rest of the world.
So if you want to build your local business brand name with our 70,000+ monthly visitors
check out the rate card or email adverts@castlebar.ie for details or ring Ray McDonnell (094-24845) for further details.
