RTE's 2fm and St Vincent De Paul have recently teamed up to launch a unique initiative to benefit irish children all over the country. With the severe downturn in the economy, it is a sad but true fact that many Irish families are in dire financial difficulties. With Christmas just a few short weeks away, many parents face the reality that they simply do not have the money to meet any of the extra expenses. The 'Tubridy Show' in response to the many calls they have received from parents who are in this situation, decided that now is the time for the nation to rally behind our own people who find themselves in the impossible situation of having to decide between putting food on the table or a simple present under the Christmas tree for their child.

The 'Toys for Tubs' appeal asks people who can spare a few euros to simply buy a toy, valued at ten Euros or more, and drop it unwrapped into any of the local collection points. These toys will then be distributed to St Vincent De Paul who will then give these toys to deserving families in time for the festive season.

John O'Shaughnessy is a local representative for the Toys for Tubs appeal in County Mayo, and is appealing for as many people to get involved as possible. As John said "We are in one of the deepest recessions our country has ever experienced and the extent of the difficulties we face are only becoming clear in recent times. It is so vital that people who are in difficulty know that their fellow citizens care, and that people who are experiencing financial issues, often through no fault of their own, realise that people in their own communities want to help in whatever way they can. Many people are under immense pressure, and this pressure is magnified when there are children involved. All parents want their children to have the best, but many parents are facing a Christmas where they can not even see their way to giving their children a small inexpensive gift on Christmas morning. Every child is precious, and by supporting the ‘Toys for Tubs' Appeal we can show in a practical way that we value each and every child in Ireland at this testing time. By doing so not only are we ensuring that every child in Ireland will have a gift on Christmas morning, but we are also relieving just a little of the pressure that so many families are facing in Ireland at this time."

To donate a toy, simply leave the gift, unwrapped, into any SuperValu across Co. Mayo. These will then be distributed in time for Christmas to deserving families.

Should you require any further information or wish to co-ordinate a toy collection in your workplace etc., please phone John O'Shaughnessy on 087 2890533 who will be happy to assist. Further info is also available on the 2fm website www.rte.ie/radio.
