We want your articles, photographs and contributions about life in Castlebar and Mayo. Castlebar.News is a voluntary website for and by the people of Castlebar. The site has been on the go since 1997 - now in its 13th year.
The site has been updated on a daily basis - 365-days-a-year - since May 2000. Obviously daily updates require a lot of material - articles, photographs, notices about events, ideas for our daily poll and the like. So new contributors are always welcome - and it's easy to start contributing - no red tape - just write/photograph and upload.
Each day the front page is graced with a photograph contributed by our volunteer contributors. Would you like to see your photos on the www.castlebar.ie front page? Digital photographs are always welcome.
We want you to log on and upload some material - it's very simple. To try out the system you can log in with username 'guest' and password 'guest'. (Please do not change this password - If you decide to become a more regular contributor you can request a customised username and password that reflects your particular contributions). Depending on your interests or the nature of your contributions - e.g. a local club or organisation - it may be possible to have a menu category devoted to just that material - in fact it may already exist and need updating.
Alternatively you can email your articles or notices directly to email@example.com.
We have a simple guide to uploading material that explains the headings and cut-and-paste boxes into which your material is placed before submitting for publication. All you need is to be able to use a browser and a word processor such as Word or Notepad. If you have your own digital photos so much the better. Uploading photographs is just as easy if not easier than writing articles or notices. Usually we try to feature photos from your articles as the featured front page photo - we need 365 featured photos each year.
Each month this site receives over three million 'hits'. That's a lot of traffic for a medium-sized town in the West of Ireland. Typically there are well over 100,000 visits to the site each month. The great thing is that most of these are from people living in Mayo or from those who have Mayo roots so contributors are being read by a very local and relevant readership.
It's simple to become a part of the castlebar.ie volunteer team. Prepare some original material that you would like to see on the site. Then just log on and upload it. It's as a simple as that. It doesn't have to be earth-shattering stuff - notices of upcoming events that you are involved in, match reports, reviews of local events, details of club activities, lists of committees, fund-raisers, etc.
Publication is free - no charges are levied on individuals, clubs or organisations submitting material but likewise no one gets paid for the material as the site is entirely voluntary. Submitting material for publication does not guarantee, however, that it will be published either in part or as a whole.
