What is Dry Mouth?

Dry Mouth is known in medical terms as Xerostomia.. It is a condition caused by a decrease in the amount of saliva produced. In some cases the flow of saliva may cease altogether.

Although Dry Mouth is not widely recognised, research suggests that there may be as many as 10 million people suffering the effects of Dry Mouth.

Why is Saliva so important?

We often take saliva for granted – until it is lacking.

Few of us realise that saliva is a complex fluid which is responsible for cleansing, lubricating and protecting our teeth and gums.

Saliva consists mainly of water, helping us to chew, swallow, taste, speak and to digest our food.

But our saliva has its very own antibacterial mechanisms to protect our mouth and, indeed our whole body, from the effects of potentially harmful bacteria.

When there is a reduction in saliva flow these essential protective systems will be less effective, leading to a gradual deterioration in the condition of teeth and gums, and often affecting our general health and well-being.

What Causes Dry Mouth?

Dry Mouth can be temporary or long-term.

There are a number of causes of temporary Dry Mouth. The main cause of temporary Dry Mouth is the taking of medication. In fact, there are as many as 400 commonly used medications which have Dry Mouth as a side effect.

Long-term Dry Mouth may be irreversible and can be due to medical treatments such as radiotherapy or head neck surgery, as well as by a number of other disorders.

How will Dry Mouth affect me?

The feeling of having a Dry Mouth can occur quite normally from time to time.

But if you find you are experiencing a feeling of dryness regularly or constantly, you will know how difficult it is to carry out normal day-to-day function s such as eating, swallowing and even speaking.

You may also notice a gradual deterioration in the condition of your teeth and gums, an inability to taste your food properly, a persistent bad breath and, in some cases, a feeling of burning in your mouth. If you wear dentures, you may also notice they are less comfortable and difficult to keep in place.

At night, especially, you may find yourself waking frequently because your mouth feels dry and uncomfortable.

Whilst these symptoms can vary from one individual to another there is no doubt that a constantly dry mouth can be inconvenient. Often it is so distressing, painful and embarrassing that it can severely affect your enjoyment of life.

Do I need professional advice?

If you do feel your mouth is often dry, or you are experiencing any of the symptoms mentioned above, make an appointment to visit your doctor, dentist or hygienist.

Is there any way to ease the effects of Dry Mouth?

Momentary relief may be achieved by sipping water or using an artificial saliva spray. However, none of these will give you a feeling of sustained moisture, nor will they act in the same way as natural saliva does in maintaining oral health, comfort and freshness.

Can I replace saliva’s missing factors?

The new BioXtra Programme has been specially developed to replace many of the protective factors of saliva which will be missing in a dry mouth. At the same time, its gentle formulation helps to ease the effects of Dry Mouth, leaving your mouth feeling moist, fresh and comfortable, day and night.
