Castlebar Industrial Estate is Castlebar's original industrial estate - it once had a diamond factory. Its most famous tenant was Travenol which employed a large proportion of Castlebar's working population at one point in the 1980s. Now survived by Baxter which is once again a substantial employer. In addition, however, a number of new manufacturing companies have opened on the industrial estate such as Volex (currently building a new plant an undergoing a major expansion), Johnson, Jackson, and APC. There are also a wide range of smaller engineering and service firms and warehouse operations.
