First Race of Autumn Series at Mayo Sailing Club

For sailors the summer is definitely drawing to a close. Thursday night saw the first of the Autumn Series and darkness falling very early as boats tied up at their moorings. Ian and Anne Gaughan's "Privateer" was the victor under the IRC handicapping system, Gerry and Maureen Daly's "Orient" emerged victorious under ECHO. Winds were medium strength and quite consistent and to everyone's relief the rain stayed far out in the bay, away from the racing area.

Summer Sailing On Clew Bay

Summer finally reached Rosmoney on Thursday 6th June and a record fleet for the season enjoyed a truly spectacular evening on the water. Sunset on the Caribbean could hardly have compared! Winds were light but no one was complaining given the recent turbulant and wet weather. A good number of extra sailors from the adult training course joined the regular crews - a perfect night for an introduction to racing. John Lambe's 'Addict' maintained her excellent record so far this year winning this, the first of the summer series, with John Gordon's 'Aurora' hot on her heels. Full results below.

The bank holiday weekend saw Mayo Sailing Club decamp en masse to Clare Island for an exciting race around the island. There was plenty of wind on that occasion and lots of challenging sailing. Winners of the main ECHO prize were John Lambe's 'Addict', first on IRC was John & Gair Gordon's 'Aurora' on her debut race of the season. Also making her first appearance of the season was Noel & Martina Conlon's 'Wild Goose', the boat who successfully completed the Round Ireland Race two years ago. Welcome non-racing visitors to the island were Robbie McMenamin's 'Inis Airc', Maurice Keogh's 'Mary Anne' and Jarlath Cunnane's 'Lir'.

Results from a Windy Spring Series at Mayo Sailing Club

Thursday 30 May was the final race of the Spring Series at Mayo Sailing Club and conditions were certainly not an improvement over previous weeks. Gusts of 35 knots plus kept spinnakers at bay for much of the race, but they did make an appearance towards the end. Great practice in putting reefs in and out of mainsails for all crews! First over the line was the Mustang 'Obsession' a new boat to David Baird and Pat Tully this year. On corrected time however with less than 2 minutes separating first from last on both handicapping systems, 'Rockabill' and 'Orient' took the honours. John Lambe's Mustang 30 'Addict' took first place in both IRC and ECHO, a fantastic start to the season for their crew.

Wet Wild and Windy

May in Mayo certainly didn't look anything like summer yesterday evening as strong winds swept across the bay playing havoc with racing. An eerie calm before the storm left sails flapping aimlessly for a while just before the starting sequence began, but that was soon forgotten as someone turned on the washing machine and the fun began. Plenty of action, lots of speed and very few spinnakers saw John Lambe's Addict retain her unbeaten status for the season. Some minor damage was incurred including one broken spinnaker pole and lots of wet bodies. Full sailing results below:
